Late payments, collection agencies....don't worry...it could be worse...

So you've made some late payments, maybe have some charge offs, or even have had your debt go to a collection agency.  There are credit cards you can qualify for.

What cards do I qualify for?

First, you need to determine how bad your credit is.  For most people this is pretty tough.  They often wonder..."Can I get an unsecured credit card...or do I have to get a secured card?"

Here are some guidelines.  First, if you have paid your bills on time for at least 6 months, and you have at least ONE loan/credit card/etc. that has been reported to your credit report as a GOOD account, you probably will qualify for an unsecured credit card.  Of course, everyone's credit is different, but generally, if your debt/income is relatively in tact, you have a good chance of receiving an unsecured credit card.

If you've had late payments or other credit problems within the last 6 months, then you probably should look for a secured credit card.  Once you have about a year's worth of history built, you should look into receiving an unsecured credit card.

What else can I do?

Here some simple things you can do to help in rebuilding your credit:

Pay your bills on-time. And, if possible, pay more than the minimum payment due....even if it's only $5 or $10 more.

Try to take out small loans at a local bank....such as $300 for a new TV. or appliance.  Banks are impressed when you make an attempt to get your credit back on track, and most will take a chance with a small amount of money.

Typically, department store credit cards are easier to be accepted as a cardholder.  Try applying for a card from a store that you shop at often.

Open, at least, a checking account.  If possible, open a savings account, too.  There are so many banks (both online and offline) that offer checking accounts with no minimum balances.  A checking account is a good thing to have.

Last, remember.....you're not alone.  There are many people out there who have bad credit and are trying to rebuild their credit history like yourself.  It may seem tough at times, but your hard work WILL pay off!

We wish you the best.
